City of Murrieta Windmill
Sykes Ranch Park in Murrieta, California, is a serene, small community park located at approximately 24245 Hayes Avenue. It serves as a peaceful remnant of the historic Sykes Ranch, originally established around 1888 on 154 acres by the Sykes family—pioneers who farmed the land, operated a small dairy, and contributed significantly to the early development of Murrieta. The park honors this legacy through interpretive markers that guide visitors along a walking path, highlighting elements like the grand 300-year-old oak tree, the historic Sykes family home remnants, the dairy barn area, reservoir, and notably, the tank house and windmill—key features of the original ranch that pumped and stored water for irrigation and daily use in the early 20th century.
Recently, the park underwent significant improvements, with construction completed in 2024. A highlight of these enhancements was the installation of a replica windmill, part of a dedicated project (often referred to in city documents as the Sykes Ranch Park Windmill and Historic Marker project). This new windmill faithfully recreates the historic one that once stood on the ranch, symbolizing the ingenuity and self-sufficiency of the Sykes family in harnessing wind power for water access on their farm. The replica was fabricated and installed to preserve and celebrate this piece of local heritage, complementing other park features like trails, picnic areas, and historical signage.
